Education in Bay County
Education is a dominant factor in the make-up of Bay County, home of , Tom P. Haney Technical Center, a highly regarded public school, Gulf Coast Community College, the Florida State University/Panama City Campus system, and several private and parochial schools.
Bay District Schools serve a population of almost 155,000 within a geographic area of 764 square miles. The school district is the 26th largest in Florida, and educates nearly 28,000 students in 38 schools. The school term usually begins in early August and ends in late May. Children must be five years of age by September 1st of the current school year to attend kindergarten. The student body is 78.9% Caucasian, 15.6% African American, 2% Asian/Pacific Islander, 1.7% Hispanic, 0.3% American Indian and 1.6 %multiracial. Per pupil expenditures are $5,001.
All Bay District public schools are fully accredited by the Florida Department of Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Annual number of high school graduates: 1,354. Annual percent of high school graduates seeking a higher degree, is 48% and, 57% planning to attend trade/technical schools.
Bay County also has several private schools that are affiliated with religious organizations. Registration times, fees and tuition may vary with each school.
Gulf Coast Community College offers degrees, university transfer, and continuing education programs to more than 23,000 students. Students may earn one of 76 Associate of Arts or one of 24 Associate of Science degrees offered by GCCC. Some one-year certificate programs are also offered. Credit and non-credit continuing workforce education programs are also available through the Office of Lifelong Learning. Presently, credit enrollment is more than 7,000.
